Despite their promise, the widespread deployment of SMRs faces critical hurdles, primarily regarding the lack of standardized international regulatory frameworks and the persistent issue of long-lived radioactive waste disposal. Additionally, while the cost per unit is lower, the overall cost of electricity produced by these reactors remains a point of debate among energy economists compared to cheap wind and solar power. However, as nations strive to meet aggressive carbon-neutrality targets, the ability of SMRs to provide a steady and reliable baseload of clean energy is positioning them as a vital component of the future global energy mix.
