Passage
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has emerged as a vital technological suite designed to mitigate climate change by preventing large quantities of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. This process involves capturing emissions at their source, such as coal-fired power plants or heavy industrial facilities, and compressing the gas for transportation. Unlike reforestation, which naturally absorbs carbon over decades, CCS offers a more immediate engineering solution to industrial-scale emissions.
Once captured, the carbon dioxide is injected deep underground into stable geological formations, such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs or saline aquifers. These subterranean sites act as permanent storage units, effectively trapping the greenhouse gas away from the climate system for thousands of years. By integrating CCS into existing industrial infrastructure, nations can continue to utilize essential fossil-fuel-based processes while significantly reducing their environmental footprint.
Despite its strategic importance, the widespread adoption of CCS is currently limited by the high capital investment required and the energy-intensive nature of the capture process. Furthermore, public concern persists regarding the long-term safety of underground storage and the potential for seismic activity or gas leakage. To address these barriers, researchers are now focusing on developing more efficient chemical sorbents and utilizing captured carbon for secondary industrial purposes, a concept known as carbon capture, utilization, and storage.
