Reading Passage
The transition to 'Open Science' has been hailed as the ultimate democratization of knowledge, promising to tear down the paywalls that have long restricted access to academic research. By making data and publications freely available to all, proponents argue that we can accelerate innovation and foster global collaboration. However, this movement often overlooks the significant financial burden it places on individual researchers and smaller institutions. In the traditional model, readers paid for access; in many Open Access frameworks, the authors must pay 'article processing charges' to have their work published. This shift creates a new form of exclusion, where the ability to share knowledge is determined by one's budget rather than the quality of one's research. Furthermore, the pressure to publish quickly in an open environment can sometimes lead to a relaxation of rigorous peer-review standards. While the goal of universal access is noble, we must ensure that the pursuit of openness does not inadvertently entrench a system where only the wealthy can afford to be heard. A truly open scientific community requires a structural overhaul that supports the creator as much as the consumer.
Which of the following best reflects the author's primary concern regarding Open Science?
