Reading Passage
The Great Barrier Reef, located off the coast of Australia, is the world's largest coral reef system. It is composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300 kilometres. Due to its vast biodiversity, it was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981.
The reef is currently facing significant threats from climate change, particularly rising sea temperatures. | When the water becomes too warm, corals expel the symbiotic algae living in their tissues, causing them to turn completely white. | This process, known as coral bleaching, can be fatal to the reef if the stress persists for an extended period.
