For over a millennium, the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic script remained a profound mystery that no scholar could decipher.

Without a key to translate these symbols, the vast historical records of the pharaonic era were inaccessible to modern historians.

This changed in 1799 with the accidental discovery of the Rosetta Stone during a military campaign in Egypt.

The stone featured the same royal decree written in three different scripts, providing the essential bilingual link needed for translation.

By comparing the known Greek text with the hieroglyphs, Jean-François Champollion finally unlocked the secrets of ancient Egyptian civilization.
