The development of sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) is a critical response to the increasing frequency of urban flooding caused by climate change. Unlike traditional drainage, which quickly directs rainwater into sewers, SuDS aim to natural water cycles by slowing down runoff. This is achieved through the integration of permeable pavements, green roofs, and retention ponds that allow water to into the ground. These systems not only reduce the pressure on aging sewer infrastructure but also help to the quality of water by filtering out pollutants. Furthermore, the presence of green spaces within the city contributes to biodiversity and helps to the urban heat island effect. Although the initial costs of implementing these systems can be high, the long-term environmental and social benefits make them a investment for modern city planners.
