Ocean acidification is a direct of rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. As the oceans absorb more CO2, the chemical of seawater undergoes a fundamental shift. This change in acidity makes it increasingly difficult for calcifying organisms to their calcium carbonate shells. The decline of coral reefs is particularly , as these structures provide essential habitats for a quarter of all marine species. Researchers are currently investigating how different species might to these changing conditions over several generations.
