The subsequent rise of antibiotics transformed modern medicine, although the recent emergence of drug-resistant bacteria now poses a new global challenge.

Before the mid-20th century, common bacterial infections often resulted in severe complications or even death.

By the onset of World War II, mass production techniques were established, allowing for the widespread treatment of wounded soldiers.

This medical paradigm changed dramatically in 1928 when Alexander Fleming accidentally discovered a mold that inhibited bacterial growth.

However, it took another decade for researchers at Oxford University to successfully isolate and purify the active substance known as penicillin.
